Rupert Murdoch, aka 'Satan', on left and son Lachlan Murdoch, aka "Spawn of Satan", on right |
I've noticed that nepotism is epidemic in corporate Australia. The sons and daughters of Australia's business tycoons are handed the wheel to their father's companies, even if they are not remotely qualified. I've noticed they do this more here than in the US.
I don't understand the reasons. Perhaps it has to do with the British roots of
Australia lending credence to the concept of royal lineage. This is in contrast to American style individualism and a healthy disdain for privilege based on nothing but birthright.
For the last couple of weeks the leading news has been the announcement of the crown prince of darkness, Lachlan Murdoch, resigned from the family company in order to move back to
Australia and live the good life with his beautiful wife and new child. He is walking away from the top job at News Corp at the ripe old age of 33.
His father, Rupert Murdoch, Australia’s answer to Citizen Kane, is reported to “be saddened” by the news. Rupert has claimed that Lachlan was one of the best newspaper editors he ever met. Funny… no one else has made such a claim. It appears now that the burden of succession now falls on the shoulders of Lachlan’s younger brother, James (32).
I has me puzzled as to why this is such big news. Who cares? It is not like he is sacrificing anything and taking a vow of poverty. He still gets millions of dollars a year to play with.
